Just thought I’d share a couple of images taken of a car in the shop, as an example of what to look for when your early (BPY/BPG/BWT) 2.0T throws fuel pressure regulation faults. Remove the high pressure pump from the head (it’s easy) and look for this. If it’s not been done, it’s a good idea to pull the pump for an inspection periodically. This one needs a cam and pump, but in some cases the pump is ok and you can replace the follower. There is an updated, hardened cam available from VWAG to address this well-known issue, and several service bulletins to this effect.

So.... approximately two weeks after leaving the factory?

oh yeah good stuff there TFritch. Since most people wont be doing their own service on one for a while at least good to let people see how it happens

No. This car is an ‘06 with 63k miles. Not all of them do it, either.

That’s not old or many miles.

That’s about the third or fourth oil change on most new cars... seems a little early to be puking fuel pumps...

No, it’s not. But they extended the warranty for this to 10 years/120k miles, and they almost always fail before then so that helps.

The fact that they only get 3 or 4 services by then is part of the reason this happens. The oil that comes out of these things past 10k is horrible, and they also have serious oil consumption problems.

oil consumption problems? i.e. its a VW. Seriously, I remember reading that the inspec consumption rate for the old 1.8t was 1-2 quarts over 3 months.

It’s nuts. The 2.0T make the 1.8t (an engine I hate) look miserly. These things drink it, sometimes a quart in less than 1000 miles. Audi has also extended the warranty for that, but they won’t do anything unless it uses 1/1000. My nearest dealer told me they have a guy there who does only 2.0T re-rings under warranty. Most use at least 2 quarts in 5k.

So that’s like 3x what my 260,000 mile land cruiser engine on original rings consumes...which is like 1 quart per 5000 miles.

Yep. My 140k Ford 5.0 uses less than half a quart in 5k. My old 22RE Toyota used about 2 quarts in 5k, and it had 325k and had never been apart. Makes these things look ridiculous.
